AED Class at Emmanuel
Dr. Jay Fox (UVa medical researcher and Red Cross instructor) is offering a free CPR and AED certification class for up to 15 people! While emergency responders are only 10 minutes away, every minute counts during cardiac arrest to prevent permanent organ and brain damage. This 2-hour training will prepare you to save a life.
Where: Downstairs Dining Room
What to wear: Comfortable clothes (you’ll be on your hands and knees with training dummies)
Cost: Free! Plus, pizza will be provided.

Picnic Eucharist
St. John’s-Waynesboro and Emmanuel-Staunton invite you to join us for a Community Eucharist and Potluck!
We will provide fried chicken, mac & cheese, and drinks. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share. We’re also seeking volunteers to assist with set up and clean up.

Suicide Prevention Workshop
Trinity Staunton will be hosting a suicide prevention workshop, led by Valley Community Services Board.
Participation is free, and all clergy, lay leaders, youth mentors, lay Eucharistic visitors, or pastoral care folks...anyone who is working closely with vulnerable populations...are encouraged to participate.
Minimum participation is 10 and max is 30. It is possible there will be a second, Sunday afternoon training for those who want to participate but cannot attend the weekday in August.

Brunch Church Volunteers Needed in September
Every other first Sunday of the month, we have Brunch Church which is an informal service with food and fellowship as part of the church service. It started with our last rector, Jonathan, and continues because we like it so much! To make it work, though, we need 3 groups -- one for set-up, one for food, and one for clean-up. The 3-person food group coordinates to make sure we have a variety of options in the quantity needed, including a gluten-free offering. Reimbursement of cost from the church is available. With and Without Dollars
Kairos Outside is a ministry that supports women who are currently or formerly incarcerated or who have incarcerated loved ones. Sponsored entirely by donors, the weekend retreat costs guests nothing, with individual meal tickets available for $10. Attendees experience God's love through personal connections, such as seeing the names of their meal sponsors and prayer supporters at every seat. Non-financial support is also welcome, including praying for the event's success or coloring paper logos at church or home to decorate the room. The upcoming weekend retreat takes place from September 11 to 13, requiring all colored logos to be submitted beforehand. Anyone who knows someone who could benefit from this ministry should contact Laura Barnett, as there is still room available.
Mini-Market
Mission and Outreach is presenting our first Mini Market entitled "How Does Your Garden Grow?" It will include flowers, plants, herbs, bulbs, fall vegetables, fruits and some baked goods. Purchase price is a free will offering to help support our donations to selected organizations in need. If you have produce from your garden or plants/flowers/bulbs you would like to donate to our table, that would be great!

March On Washington
In Adult Sunday School we often share our prayers and concerns about this changing world. During the service last Sunday, Ginny suggested I would serve as a source of information about the “Defend the Vote” March on August 28, 2026.
The march is one mile long, from the Lincoln Memorial to the Washington Monument, marking the 63rd anniversary of the March on Washington that helped lead to passing the Civil Rights Act.

Upcoming Mission and Outreach Events
Be on the look out for more information about two Mission and Outreach events coming in September:
1) On September 20 a mini market in the Narthex with fresh vegetables, plants, etc.
2) Emmanuel’s second Queen City breakfast on September 26.
We will need lots of hands to help with this event. Watch for the sign up sheet in the newsletter.
Choir Practice Starts!
As in all aspects of worship leadership, the choir cannot function without volunteers! Emmanuel’s choir provides leadership in learning new hymns and service music as well as singing anthems that pertain to the themes of the day and to help beautify our worship by praising God in our psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. We currently rehearse one hour weekly, 9-10 am on Sunday mornings, and the custom is to provide special music about twice a month. It is understood that choir members need to travel for business, pleasure and to visit family (as I do!), so if you have to miss a Sunday or two, we work around that. However, if you feel called to help lead worship in this way, even if you don’t feel you have a solo voice or do not have previous choir experience, please consider coming to our first rehearsal on Sunday, August 23rd at 9:00 am. We would love to welcome you!

Funeral Service for Doug Roller
We invite you to join us as we gather to celebrate the life and remember the faith of Doug Roller. A funeral service honoring the life and memory of Doug Roller will take place on Saturday, September 19, at Emmanuel.
Family and friends are invited to assemble for a reception and time of fellowship in the parish hall, followed by the funeral service in the sanctuary.

Staunton Cooling Center - Volunteer Opportunity
The Mission & Outreach Committee has joined the community-wide collaboration to host the Staunton Cooling Shelter. For its second year, the Shelter provides a safe, air-conditioned space for residents seeking relief from the summer heat. The Staunton Cooling Shelter will remain open through September 4, 2026. Volunteers are needed Monday through Friday, from 9 am to 5 pm at Faith Lutheran Church (17 N Lewis St. Staunton, VA). Shifts are in two-hour increments each weekday.
