Annual Events

Pax Golden Ladle Soup Competition
All ages are welcome to participate!
Golden Ladle is our Youth-organized annual soup competition. Members of the congregation enter their delicious soups and stews to win the coveted Golden Ladle award. Held sometime in Winter after church.

Lenten Programs
All ages are welcome!
Each Lent Emmanuel joins together with other communities of faith to eat dinner, and discuss given topics or do service projects. Recently, we have included Trinity Church and Allen Chapel African Methodist Episcopal (AME).
For more information: The Rev. Shelby Owen.

Palm Sunday
The congregation joins together with those from Trinity Episcopal Church and St. Francis Catholic church. Members gather at Trinity and begin the Palm Sunday Parade through downtown Staunton. It concludes with a Holy Eucharistic Service at Emmanuel.

Easter Day
We celebrate the joyful resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ through festive worship. Worship is followed by a children's egg hunt.

Youth Sunday
Each spring, usually in early May, the celebration of Sunday worship is served primarily by our youth, who serve as ushers, lectors, musicians, chalicists and preachers. While youth at Emmanuel are always welcome at worship, this is a special time dedicated to celebrate their unique offerings and recognize our new graduates.

Gibbs-Lotz Scholarships
J. Lewis Gibbs-Lotz Scholarships, in memory of long-time rector, "Papa" Gibbs and his daughter, Josephine "Jo" Gibbs Lotz, are available to communicants of Emmanuel and their children to further their education. A communicant is defined by the Canons of the Church as 1. Has been baptized (Title I, Canon 16, Sect. 2); 2. Is regular in participation in Sunday worship (Title II, Canon I and Title I, Canon 16, Sect. 2); and 3. Has received communion at least three times (unless for good cause prevented) in the past year (Title I, Canon 16, Sect. 3). Applications are usually due in the church office mid-May.

Picnic Worship
Each year in the summer or early fall, we have an outdoor Eucharist picnic, sometimes at the home of a parishioner, or more recently, with our sister church Allen Chapel A.M.E. (African Methodist Episcopal) Church at Montgomery Hall Park.

Harvest Day
All age groups
Harvest Day is a day to share our harvest (blessings) with those in our community who are in need. Started in 1994, it is a one-Sunday event in which we at Emmanuel dig deep and share our harvest with those who are experiencing challenging financial circumstances. All of the contributions that day go to the Emmanuel Discretionary Fund which is distributed in our church community. Harvest Day is held on/around the first Sunday in November.
